Osborne Itching to Be Scratched from Injured List

Donovan Osborne is learning patience. He's kind of antsy to get the lessons completed.

The Cardinals' top starting pitcher by the end of last season, Osborne missed the close of the 1993 season and all of 1994 because of a shoulder problem that required surgery. He missed nine starts last summer because of elbow problems.

His progress has been delayed this spring after he suffered broken ribs in an auto accident after a workout.

With Cardinals coach Mark DeJohn among those watching, Osborne threw off a mound Thursday for the first time since the incident. With batters in the box, he fired 50 pitches to minor-league catcher Paul Ellis and walked off encouraged.

"I just need some arm strength," Osborne said. "I expected that. I've only thrown four times the last month and a half, and never off a mound. I feel good."

He didn't have his customary pop at the end of the session in cool weather. Osborne is waiting for that to come.
