Mcintosh Gets out of the Spirit

Baltimore Spirit forward Franklin McIntosh asked coach Mike Stankovic last week for an extra day off to attend to some personal business in California.

Stankovic gave the NPSL career scoring leader his approval. When the Spirit trained last Wednesday, McIntosh was a no-show. Stankovic suspended him for the final two regular-season games and carried the suspension into the playoffs.

"I have to worry about the entire team and what benefit he brings to us," Stankovic said. "Sure, he's a great player, but we might be better defensively without him. I gave him the extra time off, and then he did this to the team. I don't understand it."

Since taking over for Dave MacWilliams at midseason, Stankovic has imposed a defensive label on the club. He prefers low-scoring games and a well-disciplined team.

"We've gotten this far with the way Mike runs the team," said Spirit goalie Cris Vaccaro. "I don't know what Franklin does for us on defense."

McIntosh leads the Spirit with 177 points and has scored 1,030 points in his career. …
