Gop Congressmen Criticize Clinton on Suit

Inadvertently stirring up the Vietnam draft issue that dogged Bill Clinton in 1992, his lawyer suggests that a sex harassment lawsuit be postponed because he is commander in chief of the armed forces.

Clinton avoided military service during the Vietnam War.

On Tuesday, House Republicans circulated a letter saying Clinton's legal argument in the Paula Jones case "is a slap in the face to the millions of men and women who . . . are serving on active duty."

The letter was signed by Rep. Bob Stump of Arizona, chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and Rep. Robert Dornan of California, chairman of the subcommittee on military personnel.

Robert Bennett, the president's lawyer, said Republicans were taking the legal argument out of context "in order to create a political issue." The argument was in a 21-page brief filed with the Supreme Court last week.

The president's lawyers argued that except for exceptional circumstances, an incumbent president should never be placed in the position of having to submit to a civil damages action while in office. …
