Edwardsville Woman Found Dead Probably Drowned, Panel Finds

The coroner's jury ruled Wednesday that Elizabeth Jones of Edwardsville probably drowned but that the circumstances of her death were undetermined.

Jones, 41, disappeared after leaving a church a block from her home on Feb. 24. Despite searches, she was not found until April 20, when two teen-agers cut through a wooded drainage creek and saw her body under layers of logs and debris.

A study of insects found in her body indicated she had been dead in the creek for the two months she was missing. This conclusion by a scientist at Purdue University was disclosed Wednesday at the coroner's inquest.

Although her family believes she was abducted and murdered, authorities said again Wednesday that they have no evidence of criminal activity.

Lt. David Bradford of Edwardsville police said all of the evidence suggests Jones left her church about 9 a.m. Feb. 24, slipped into the nearby creek, was unable to climb out and died there.
