U.S. Socialist Likes Cuba's Style Best

James Harris, presidential candidate this year of the tiny Socialist Workers Party, says he isn't thrilled by the Communists' possible restoration to power in Russia.

In fact, Harris said here Monday, the overthrow of the Soviet Union was "one of the best things to happen to working people in the world."

Harris, in an interview during a campaign visit, said he's no fan of Russian President Boris Yeltsin either.

Yeltsin was narrowly ahead of Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov in returns Sunday from the Russian election.

The two are expected to square off in a runoff election next month.

Harris, 48, said Yeltsin's thrust toward a market society "has done nothing for the vast majority of Russian people" and resulted in lower wages and a decline in life expectancy.

Harris, a former meatpacking plant employee from Atlanta, said Communist Cuba comes the closest to what the Socialist Workers would like for the United States.

"In some ways, it's far more democratic than the United States," he said. "They take care of the needs of working people. …
