Jean Smith, 55, returned home to St. Louis this week after some 30 years and made a shocking discovery.

"I can't grasp how tremendous the area has grown," said Smith, who now lives in Boise, Idaho. "There's a big mall near where our house used to be in the Ladue area. And where Ballas comes up, that's where we used to ride our horses."

The mall Smith was referring to is the Galleria. And if horses rode up Ballas Road these days, a multi-car pile-up would soon follow.

"I just can't believe it," Smith said. "It amazes me."

Likewise, competitors have been amazed this week by Smith - perhaps better remembered as Jean Lane - at the Women's Western Golf Association 96th National Amateur Championship at Fox Run.

Smith made the qualifying cut by 10 strokes and on Thursday advanced to the quarterfinals with a 1-up victory after 19 holes over Ann Pohira.
