People in Project's Path Want Policy Made Clear Residents Want Maximum Payments for Relocation

About a dozen residents who live in apartments on Agnes and Rose avenues have asked the Brentwood Board of Aldermen to explain its relocation policy to the residents who will move to make room for a new development, the Promenade.

Mayor Mark Kurtz told the residents at the board's meeting Monday night that a relocation policy had not been completed but a draft of it was available and would be sent to the residents who would be moving. He said that Brentwood had hired Community Program Development Corp. to provide relocation services.

Kurtz told the residents, "The final policy will be one adopted by this board in conjunction with the developer."

According to the draft, occupants will be able to choose between a fixed sum and itemized moving costs. The relocation payments are calculated according to the number of rooms of furniture to be moved. Occupants of a three-room house, for example, would get $450, or a four-room house $550. From there, each additional room would bring $75 more.

A business occupied by the owner could choose to take a fixed payment of $1,500 or to itemize the costs. A commercial tenant could itemize or take a fixed payment of $2,500.

Economic Development Director Bob Shelton said in an interview that people usually took the fixed amount. …
