Hezbollah Fires Rockets at Israel, Claims Retaliation

Shiite Muslim guerrillas fired a barrage of rockets at northern Israel on Tuesday, wounding 36 people. Israeli opposition leaders quickly seized on the attack as political ammunition a month before general elections.

The Iranian-backed Hezbollah group said the rocket attack was in retaliation for a land mine explosion that killed a Lebanese teen-ager Monday and wounded two boys, one of them seriously.

Residents and Hezbollah members claimed that the mine was planted by Israeli forces. The Israeli army denied any involvement. Israeli forces responded to the barrage with air raids and artillery and tank fire against 17 Shiite Muslim villages near the Israeli-held zone in southern Lebanon. No casualties were reported from the bombardment. In Washington, State Department spokesman Glyn Davies blamed Hezbollah for instigating the latest fighting. "We have repeatedly called for restraint, but Hezbollah is once again acting to inflame the situation," Davies said. …
