Probert's Goals Help 'Hawks Top Leafs

Bob Probert scored two goals to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-2 victory over Toronto on Thursday night, dimming the Maple Leafs' hopes for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Blackhawks had fallen behind 2-1 only 17 seconds into the second period. But goals by Bernie Nicholls, James Black, Tony Amonte and Probert gave Chicago a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Probert also scored in the first period of a game marred by several fights and bloody altercations. The prime combatants were Chicago's Jim Cummins and Toronto's Nick Kypreos, who tangled three times. Wendel Clark and Doug Gilmour scored for the Maple Leafs (33-36-12), who remained one point behind the Blues (32-34-15) in the Western Conference. Devils 3, Capitals 2: New Jersey remained in the playoff hunt by rallying from a two-goal deficit and getting 24 saves from Martin Brodeur in a victory over Washington. Flyers 3, Canadiens 2: John LeClair scored his 51st goal as Philadelphia clinched its second successive Atlantic Division title with a victory over Montreal in the last regular-season NHL game at the Spectrum. …
