His on-air style could trigger massive coronaries among commercial radio programmers.

He uses Richard Strauss's ostentatious introduction to "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (aka "2001: A Space Odyssey" theme) as a bed-liner for his blues shows.

He's hosted blues radio programs during the past four decades on three different St. Louis stations, had his own club (the Maj estic in East St. Louis), and two record stores, including House of the Blues, which used to be on Delmar and Vandeventer. His name is Gabriel. Just Gab riel. Why he doesn't use a last name is a mystery, but everyone knows it's difficult to serve papers on a man with only a first name. Currently in his 60s, Gabriel can be heard nowadays Sunday from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. on KDHX (FM 88.1). He will be on hand Saturday at Off Broadway, when some of his friends gather to hold the Gabriel Ap preciation Day. The benefit is being held to help celebrate Gab riel's 44 years in radio.
