The Fort Zumwalt South girls soccer team has some growing up to do. Literally.

The Bulldogs, off to a 3-3 start, have a starting lineup that includes three freshmen, three sophomores, three juniors and two seniors.

"Player for player, this is easily the most skilled team I've had with the girls," South coach Lloyd Daugherty said. "We have some speed up top, we have a solid defense and technically, this is a very sound group of soccer players." But... "We're awfully young," he continued. "A lot of these girls are playing together for the first time and we're still in the process of developing the team concept. At this point, we don't have any real all-stars, so it's important that we play as a team. "We're still looking for a few of the young players to step up and feel comfortable as varsity soccer players. But I'm confident that that'll come around as we play together more." The Bulldogs, who finished 8-8-4 overall and 3-3-1 in the Gateway Athletic Conference a year ago, will be led by co-captains Kelly Mitchell and Lisa Marren. Mitchell, a junior defender, was a third-team All-GAC selection a year ago and will anchor the South defense. Marren, a senior forward, was among the team's leading scorers a year ago, finishing with two goals and four assists. Other returning starters include senior Heather Hodge (eight shutouts) in goal, junior Janet Hoff in the midfield and junior Annette Farrar (four goals, two assists) at forward. The newcomers include sophomore Megan Calloni and freshmen Kelly Wolfe and Melissa Layton in the backfield, sophomore Laurie Beaury and freshman Sarah Haynes in the midfield and sophomore Kelly Merilees at striker. "I was a little worried about bringing up so many young players, but the JV is 5-0 and playing some great soccer," Daugherty said. "The players I brought up are all very good and I think the year's experience on varsity will help them a great deal. …
