Staci Roeber, a senior at Incarnate Word Academy, is in the spotlight because of her leadership skills and her desire to help other people.

Staci was thrilled when she was selected last year to be a peer counselor. She leads small peer groups for underclassmen, runs discussion groups at school retreats and helps students learn how to handle stressful situations.

"I've always tried to be approachable, so that if a student needs help, they'll know - `That's Staci Roeber; you can talk to her,' " says Staci.

When she served as a school ambassador, Staci helped some of those students before they came to Incarnate Word. She met with grade-school students interested in attending Incarnate Word and let them shadow her through her class schedule.

Staci's schedule is packed tight. She's the student manager of the bookstore, throws discus for the track team and is a member of campus ministry. Outside of school, she's the vice president of the Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation Alumni Chapter in St. Louis. Staci helps plan the chapter's social activities and service projects, such as the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon and the Walk for AIDS.

Staci, who has a 3.3 grade-point-average, has been listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. She has served as a class officer, a student-council representative and a stage-crew manager. She has been on the track-and-field team all four years and has managed the girls' basketball and volleyball teams. She also has been on the yearbook and newspaper staffs all four years.

Staci, 18, lives in St. Charles with her parents, Russ and Pam Roeber. She has an older sister, Lauri, 21.

Here's what Staci has to say about herself:

* After high school I plan to: attend William Jewell College and major in nursing.

* The next item of clothing I would like to buy is: a pair of Birkenstocks.

* The best book I ever read was: "The Color Purple," by Alice Walker.

* I listen to: all types of music. My dial is constantly changing.

* I'm most proud of: going to the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar.

* Last time I cleaned my room I found: my floor.

* My favorite subject at school is: biology. I am fascinated with the anatomy and functions of the human body. …
