Room at Top Tech, Financial Companies Move Up in Big Way
They didn't finish first or second, but financial institutions dominated 1995's Post-Dispatch list of the top 50 public companies.
Whether big or small, commercial bank or savings & loan, a dozen financial companies landed on the list and another just missed - at 51st. Many of them scored better in 1995 than they did in 1994.
Mercantile Bancorpation Inc. moved up to fifth place from seventh and Boatmen's Bancshares Inc. climbed to eighth from 19th. Commerce Bancshares Inc. jumped to 15th place from 32nd.
The top company for the second year in succession was Titan Wheel International Inc. of Quincy, Ill. Titan's strong showing demonstrates that its chief executive, Maurice M. Taylor Jr., is a better businessman than politician.
Taylor's run for the GOP nomination for president this year paled in comparison to his company's doubling of profit and 53 percent increase in sales.
MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. of O'Fallon, Mo., the maker of silicon wafers for semiconductors, went public in mid-1995 and jumped to second place in its first year of eligibility for the list.
