A hit by Belleville East's Greg Distler in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Jim Pecoraro, lifting the Lancers over Collinsville 9-8 in an Illinois Class AA sectional semifinal Monday at Kaskaskia College.

The Lancers, 23-9 and ranked eighth in the Post-Dispatch large-school poll, advance to today's sectional title game against Marion at 4 p.m.

"Leave it to the team clown," Belleville East coach Dennis Schutzanhofer said of Distler. "Let's just say he's always keeping us on our toes."

Pecoraro and Collinsville's Matt Field were expected to be the deciding factors in Monday's game. But Field gave up five runs in the first inning, including a two-run home run by Nathan Hoedel.

Collinsville began to chip away, scoring a run in the third inning, three in the fourth and four in the sixth. The Kahoks sent nine batters to the plate that inning and took an 8-5 lead.

Belleville East responded in its half of the sixth, again against Field. It started with a leadoff single by Jason Dunham, followed by a strikeout, then a walk to Andy Rushing, who was pinch-hitting for Pecoraro. …
