Board Approves Salary Hikes of Up to 6 Percent

The Webster Groves School Board has approved a 6 percent salary increase for teachers in the coming school year and a 4 percent salary increase the following year.

The board approved the increase Tuesday.

The increase refers to the total increase that the district will spread among its 310 teachers. Not every teacher will get the full percentage increase, said Jerry Knight, associate superintendent.

The increase will raise the starting salary for a teacher with a bachelor's degree and no experience to $25,688 from $24,700.

The salary agreement would raise to $57,958 from $56,270 the salary for a teacher at the top of the scale with a doctoral degree and 14 years of experience. The district has four people who earn top scale.

The average salary would go to about $41,268, Knight said.

The 6 percent increase will cost the district an additional $668,000 a year; the 4 percent increase, an additional $475,000.

Knight said officials hoped the settlement would prove higher than most area districts to help Webster Groves recoup somewhat. …
