Jordan Homers in Cards' 9-4 Win

Article excerpt

Mark Sweeney and John Mabry each had three hits, a walk, drove in a run and scored two as manager Tony La Russa enjoyed a successful return to the Bay Area when the Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 9-4 Friday night.

The series here is La Russa's first since he joined the Cardinals after directing several championship teams for the Oakland Athletics.

Winning for the 12th time in their last 16 games, the Cardinals broke a 3-3 tie with six runs in the eighth. In their last two eighth innings ag ainst the Giants, the Cardinals have scored 17 runs. The 11 other came May 9 in St. Louis.

After earlier hitting a homer, double and single, Sweeney walked leading off the eighth against loser Osvaldo Fernandez (3-5), who had started Thursday only to have the game rained out after one inning. Mabry has had six consecutive singles sandwiched around a walk over his last two games. He singled to right, scoring Lankford with the tie-breaking run. Gaetti also scored when catcher Kirt Manwaring, taking the throw home from the outfield, fired high to second where he would have had Mabry.

Luis Alicea knocked in the third run of the inning and his second of the game with his second single. Alicea then came around on a double by Andy Benes, who was two for 24, and reliever Rich DeLucia's wild pitch. Brian Jordan capped the outburst by popping a two-run homer.

After he gave up two runs in the Giants' third, Benes (3-7) pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out spot later in the inning. He proceeded to retire 15 of the next 16 hitters he faced.

Sweeney, making his first start on the trip, also stole his first base of the season in the Cardinals' first inning after he had singled with two out. …
