Pumpkins Reschedule

The Smashing Pumpkins concert, originally scheduled for July 21 but postponed after keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin died of a heroin overdose, has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the Kiel Center. Contemporary Productions could not confirm whether Garbage, the original opening act, would still be on the bill. All tickets previously purchased will be honored. Tickets are still available for $25. (968-1800).

New Flavour

The last time I visited the Alverne Chapel downtown, there were few souls there under age 50. On Friday night, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone over 21 in the place.

That's because the old Alverne, at 1014 Locust Street downtown, is now the new Flavour, a no-booze, under-21 club started by Joan R. Ferguson, a neophyte to the nightclub business. Flavour's grand opening will be stretched over two nights, from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

"Flavour is designed to appeal to 17-to 21-year-olds, those too old for kiddie bars and too young for nightclubs that serve liquor," said Ferguson, a former staffer at The Riverfront Times.

"We won't serve alcohol, but we'll have a nice selection of soft drinks and bottled water," she said.

Flavour was previously the site of the short-lived club Hyperspace, which closed in May.

"We just brought the club back to where it's really nice," Ferguson said.

"It was a beautiful Catholic chapel to begin with, with gorgeous stained-glass windows and exquisite marble. Where the altar once stood is now the site of a DJ's booth. We've taken one corner of the bar and put in couches and chairs and nice lights. We've stacked 10 TVs in the corner and we're going to show Japanese cartoons and music videos."

Ferguson has tapped some of the area's top DJs to spin at her club. …
