Ali, Nicklaus Meet on 9th Green

One could make a case, and a pretty convincing one, that Jack Nicklaus and Muhammad Ali are the two most influential athletic figures of their time. On the ninth green Wednesday at Valhalla Golf Club, the two sports giants met for the first time.

"If you would have asked me if there's one person in sports that I have not met that I would have liked to have met, it would have been Ali," Nicklaus said afterward. "He's about the only guy I hadn't met."

Ali, who is from Louisville, requested the opportunity to meet Nicklaus and have a picture taken with him. Thus, "The Greatest" met the "Golden Bear."

Ali feigned some boxing moves and posed for pictures with Nicklaus, but was unable to converse. He is slowed by Parkinson's syndrome.

"As I walked off the ninth green, I told him that I had been a fan of his and I was honored to meet him," Nicklaus said. "I said I was very pleased for him with being able to light the torch at the Olympics.

"I asked him if he was a golf fan or had played any golf at all. …
