Union Pacific Corp. said Thursday that it will begin moving hundreds of jobs to St. Louis from Colorado later this year.

The railroad company has said that St. Louis could get 400 or more new jobs. The company would not release any specific figure on Thursday, although a spokesman said the number would be in the hundreds.

Richard Fleming, head of the Regional Commerce and Growth Association, has been meeting with top Union Pacific executives, and he hopes this area will win even more jobs from the railroad.

"The number we are using for our targets are 500 to 1,000," Fleming said.

He said Union Pacific is considering moving its headquarters, which would bring even more jobs if St. Louis were chosen.

At an average salary of $35,000, the 500 jobs would inject $17.5 million a year into the economy here.

John Bromley, a spokesman for the Omaha-based railroad, said the company will begin moving employees from its Denver office to Omaha and St. Louis later this year. …
