Chiefs' Defense, Already Afc's Best, Looking Better

The AFC's No. 1 defense of 1995 may be even better in 1996.

The Kansas City Chiefs made it eight consecutive exhibition quarters without yielding a touchdown Saturday night, handing the mistake-plagued New Orleans Saints one of their worst exhibition losses ever, 42-6.

"I think this defense should be better," tackle Joe Phillips said after the Chiefs (2-0) held the Saints to just four first downs and 126 total yards in heavy rain. "We have a lot of confidence that we built up last year. We know this system even better and we know each other better."

"I think it was a combination of factors," said coach Marty Schottenheimer. "We played good, solid football. We were able to take care of the football and not turn the thing over. You know how important that is in any game, particularly one played in these kind of conditions."

Donnell Bennett and Greg Hill each scored on short runs for the Chiefs, who held Dallas to two field goals in a 32-6 victory in their first exhibition outing. …
