The Vicarious Bettor plays off a $100 stake provided by his employer. Each week, he wagers a small portion of that amount and reports the results here.

The game: Caribbean stud poker.

The session: 11 p.m. Thursday on the Alton Belle.

The last time I played my own money on Caribbean, almost everything was going my way. I had pairs or better on my first seven hands. The dealer qualified on all but two of those hands. (I had three aces on one in which he didn't qualify, but I couldn't complain with the luck I was having.)

The table at the Belle wasn't nearly as hot. On the hand before I entered, the dealer turned three deuces and scared away everyone at the table but me and another player.

On each hand, I made the $1 side bet for the progressive and the $5 ante. I would back up the ante with $10 on any pair or better. …
