New `Cup' to Erase Memory of Big Red

Article excerpt

As the story goes, the "coveted" Governor's Cup was unearthed during some recent remodeling at Arrowhead Stadium. But it won't be needed.

Although it's not ready yet, there's a new cup on the way for the revived preseason series between Missouri's two National Football League franchises. And it's a good thing, too.

"The cup is really ugly," Rams cornerback Todd Lyght said. "We're debating whether we should leave it here in Kansas City or not. We need to take it over to a silversmith, have him melt it down, and do it with a mold."

The governor's tent overflowed with state legislators Saturday. Representing the Rams besides Kroenke were vice presidents Jay Zygmunt, Bob Wallace and Steve Ortmayer, and the team's executive without portfolio, Kroenke's St. Louis attorney, Alan Bornstein.

The old cup was used during the postgame trophy presentation, with quarterbacks Steve Walsh and Tony Banks representing the Rams' players. But the ceremony offered no clue as to the outcome of the quarterback derby. …
