Joyner-Kersee Gets Back On The Court

Jackie Joyner-Kersee said her feet were sore and her game was rusty.Still, the Olympic track and field great was encouraged after her first real day of work at her new job - playing for the Richmond Rage of the American Basketball League.

Joyner-Kersee joined the team Monday for a three-hour workout. The practice, closed to the media, was Joyner-Kersee's first serious basketball workout in 11 years. "You could tell I hadn't had on basketball shoes for a while," she said. "My toes were kind of bothering me. Other than that, it was fine. I'm not in shape quite yet, but that'll come." The three-time Olympic gold medalist last played basketball at UCLA from 1981-85. She was a four-year starter at small forward and still ranks among the career leaders in scoring, rebounding and games. BASKETBALL Prep Star Commits To Kentucky Ryan Hogan, nephew of Kentucky All-American Kevin Grevey, orally committed to play for the Wildcats next year. Hogan, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, averaged 25 points, seven rebounds and three assists as a junior last season in leading Deerfield (Ill.) High School to the Class 6A state tournament. He is Kentucky's first oral commitment for the 1997-98 season. Chris Ridens of Mountain Grove, Mo., wanted to play his college basketball fairly close to home. Iowa State turned out to be close enough. Ridens, a 6-foot-10 1/2, 205-pounder, has told the Iowa State coaches he'll sign with the Cyclones in November, his father said Monday. He also had strongly considered Iowa, Drake, Missouri, St. Louis and Nebraska. Meramec Community College has picked Kathryn Blair to be head coach of its new women's basketball program. Blair, who coaches at Northwest High in House Springs, will keep that position this year. Meramec begins play in the 1996-97 season. HOCKEY Blues Will Hold Rally Thursday The Blues have scheduled a free rally Thursday at Kiel Center to kick off the season. KMOX announcers will introduce the players at 11:30, and a Blue and White game will follow. At 2 p.m., fans can meet the players and get autographs. Concession stands and the Kiel Club will be open for lunch. …
