Masked Gunmen Kill 21 At Mosque

Masked men opened fire on Sunni Muslim worshipers Monday in Multan, killing 21 and seriously wounding at least 33 others. No one claimed responsibility for the attack, but police believe it was connected to recent violence between Shiite and Sunni Muslims. Early morning prayers had just begun at the Majid Al-Khair mosque in the southern Punjab town of Multan, about 270 miles south of Islamabad, when gunmen leaped out of black cars and began spraying bullets, witnesses said. All those killed were Sunni Muslims. Many were boys from a religious school. AP MEXICO Police Official Tortured, Killed A deputy police commander fighting drug trafficking in Tijuana was tortured before he was shot to death, and his body was dumped in an abandoned truck in Mexico City, Mexico's news agency reported. The official, Jorge Garcia Vargas, was the seventh senior federal law enforcement official from Baja California state to be shot to death this year. The bodies of three other men - also tortured - were found with him, the Notimex news agency said. The seven Americans and two Russians wrapped up five days of joint work in which American astronauts Shannon Lucid and John Blaha swapped places and more than 6,000 pounds of cargo was transferred to and from Mir. Atlantis pulled away from Mir Monday night and will head back to Earth Thursday. The shuttle's landing will mark the end of a 188-day stay in space for Lucid, the longest by an American and a record for a woman. …
