Team Hopes to Add Experience to Youth, Regain Winning Streak

The soccer season started well enough for the Trojans of Troy Buchanan High.

After beating Winfield to open the season, the Trojans won the Lutheran-St. Charles Tournament for the first time, beating Lutheran North, Lutheran-St. Charles in penalty kicks and John Burroughs 2-1 in the title match.

"It was a great tournament for us," coach Leo Pagano said. "We played hard and we got some excellent results." But since that early-season success, the Trojans have received a harsh dose of reality. They've won just one of their last six games, including 9-0 setbacks to Francis Howell North and Granite City Tuesday and Wednesday of this week during pool play of the Hazelwood Central Tourament. Troy, which was scheduled to play Parkway Central in the final round of pool play Thursday, is 5-6 overall and 0-3 in Gateway Athletic Conference play. "This is always the toughest stretch of our schedule," said Pagano, whose team was 1-6-1 in league play and 7-15-2 overall last year. "But we've actually played pretty well; we've been in three of the six games we've lost. The last couple of days have been tough - teams like Howell North and Granite City play the game at a much higher level than we do - but you can't expect to get to that level if you've never experienced it. We just have to try to work through this part of the schedule and hope that we can bring something positive away from these games." The Trojans are a young team, featuring only a handful of seniors. The top early-season scorers, brothers Jim and Jack Reiter, have notched six goals apiece this season. Jim is a sophomore while Jack is a junior. Another junior Jeremy Brown, rotates between forward and the midfield, depending on the formation the Trojans are playing. Brown was a third-team All-GAC midfielder a year ago. Other top players in the midfield include senior Clint Courtney, junior Dusty Lichtieg and sophomores John Pace, Mike Helton and Ben Picker. …
