It's Best Never to Buy a Wild Animal as a Pet

Dear Dr. Fox: Last year, a breeder gave us a pygmy hedgehog because he was the runt of the litter.

My teen-age daughter handles him, and he is affectionate toward her; he tolerates me, and he has become buddies with one of our two cats.

A pet shop found some magazine articles for us, but other than that, we have no information on how to care for him. Our vet doesn't handle hedgehogs, and the vet who did has left our area. We don't know what to feed him except for dry kitten food and live crickets. Would he hunt for bugs if we put him in the grass? Would he get fleas? Where can we get a vet for him? The pet shops here just sell hedgehogs that private owners give them and are of no help. I think it's bordering on criminal for pet stores to sell animals, like hedgehogs, that belong in the wild. So often, as you have discovered, there's very little literature on caring for exotic animals and very few veterinary specialists around to h elp when the animal gets sick. …
