Bond Wants FBI Lawyer to Resign

Sen. Christopher S. Bond, R-Mo., has called for the resignation of the FBI's top lawyer, whom Bond accuses of politicizing the agency.

In a letter to Attorney General Janet Reno this week, Bond and Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., said the lawyer, Howard Shapiro, improperly tipped off the White House about information in the FBI file of Craig Livingstone.

Livingstone was the then-White House aide who improperly reviewed the FBI files of hundreds of former White House staff members. The House Oversight Committee asked for Livingstone's own file, and, while the FBI was reviewing it for release, an aide saw a notation in it that said Hillary Rodham Clinton had recommended Livingstone for the job. Shapiro then told the White House, which had previously denied that she had made the recommendation. Bond's letter said Shapiro passed on the information "to mitigate embarrassing political damage. Mr. Shapiro is not the individual to hold such a sensitive position at a time when the bureau is in desperate need of strong leadership. …
