Proposal to Cut Tax Rate on Meeting Agenda Tonight

St. Charles City Councilman William Conrey said he doubts many residents, if any, will show up for tonight's public hearing on setting the city's property-tax rate for the coming year, even though he has proposed a major cut.

The City Council will hold a public hearing on setting the tax rate at 6:45 p.m. at City Hall, 200 North Second Street. St. Charles' property-tax rate is $1.04 for each $100 of assessed valuation and likely will remain the same. Of this, 61 cents goes to the city, 28 cents to the park fund and 15 cents for retiring park bonds.

"None of the residents has told me if they're coming," said Conrey, 2nd Ward, on Monday. He is advocating cutting the city's property tax by 26 cents, which would bring it down to 35 cents for the city portion.

"I think that's interesting, considering how hard I've been pushing (the tax cut). The money's there to do it; it's just whether the council wants to allocate the money for a cut and, so far, they haven't been willing. …
