The following incidents were among those reported to police departments in the St. Louis area or that involved action in area courts:


St. Louis: The body of an unidentified man was discovered Wednesday afternoon in a vacant building in the 1100 block of Newstead Avenue. Police believe the man, probably in his late teens, had been dead for several days. The cause of death is unknown; detectives suspect foul play.


An autopsy will be performed today.




Cincinnati: Richard Lee Guthrie, 38, pleaded guilty Wednesday in a string of 19 bank holdups, including three in the St. Louis area as part of a gang that called itself the Midwest Bank Robbers. Guthrie is likely to be sentenced in September. Guthrie pleaded guilty of the bank robberies, two firearms violations and two fraud counts. The holdups in St. Louis were at Commercial Bank of Westport in 1994; Magna Bank in Bridgeton last year; and Roosevelt Bank in St. Louis, also last year.

O'Fallon: Chief U.S. District Judge Jean C. Hamilton has awarded former O'Fallon, Mo., police Officer Dennis Faulkenberry more than $160,000 in his lawsuit that claimed he was fired because he was overweight. In an order made public Wednesday, Hamilton awarded Faulkenberry $100,000 for pain and suffering under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Hamilton awarded Faulkenberry $60,600 under the Missouri Human Rights Act to compensate for lost wages and benefits. Faulkenberry, at 6 feet 3 inches, weighs about 350 pounds.

St. Louis: Members of Cosmos Lodge No. 282, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons filed suit Wednesday to block the sale of the Masonic Temple, 3681 Lindell Boulevard, to St. Louis University. The university has been reported to be interested in the temple as a performing arts center. …
