Irked Officials Give Reprieve to Hauler

Festus officials have reached an agreement with the city's trash hauler that they hope will improve service and end a dispute between the hauler and the city.

City Administrator Richard Turley and representatives of the trash contractor, CWI Inc., crafted the agreement.

Earlier, two members of the CWI staff along with several of the company's drivers attended a Festus City Council meeting to try to address concerns about trash collection.

At the council meeting, Mayor John Graham said he favored canceling the CWI contract and having Festus operate its own trash-collection service.

He told the CWI employees, "We don't care who offers (the service), we need reliability. The citizens and I are irritated."

Gary Jergens, district manager for CWI, said, "Our goal is zero missed pickups. We have no desire to have our contract terminated."

Turley told Jergens, "For us to continue the relationship, we need a trigger for immediate termination."

The pact that Turley and CWI devised later calls for automatic termination of the trash-hauling contract if CWI misses 25 pickups in two consecutive months. …
