Christian Music Showcased in Contest

Article excerpt

More than 40 Christian musicians will perform in a talent contest at an area Baptist church this weekend.

Winners will advance to regional and national competitions, where the grand prize will be a national touring contract. Second prize will be a pr ofessional recording session.

The Stairstep concerts will be at 7 o'clock tonight and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of St. Peters, 3533 Mid Rivers Mall Drive.

Judges will use a point system to evaluate the performers on original composition, song interpretation, marketability, overall appearance, audience rapport and quality of performance. The contestants will not compete against one another.

The winners will compete in the Showcase finals at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The public is invited to all performances. A $2 donation will be requested Friday and Saturday, and an offering will be taken Sunday.

The talent search is sponsored by Church Growth Ministries of Omaha, Neb., in cooperation with First Baptist Church of St. Peters. The group is headed by retired Baptist pastor Syl G. Adkins and his son Les Adkins.

Growth Ministries was started by the elder Adkins in 1986 as a consulting operation for the evaluation of church growth. The new mission of the organization is to promote fledgling Christian artists through talent searches, seminars and networking. It could be described as a Christian music talent agency with an evangelistic bent.

In the past year, Growth Ministries has arranged talent searches in churches and Christian colleges in Kansas, Oklahoma and recently Las Vegas.

Syl Adkins said that booking the talent searches can be difficult in Baptist church circles. "A lot of churches don't approve of this kind of thing because it's probably too liberal," he said.

Growth Ministries will give seminars at 5:30 p.m. today and Saturday on how to get started and how to advance in the music industry. …
