OK, YOU can ask "Ou est la gare?" and make it sound like the train station instead of the war. But can you order gigot d'agneau (leg of lamb) or tarte fine chaude au beurre de miel (apple and almond tart with honey butter) at that quaint French restaurant? Full steam ahead: The American Association of Railroaders is offering two train excursions this month. The first is a day trip on Thursday, Oct. 24, on a Union Pacific train that the Railroaders say is the fastest steam locomotive still in existence. The all-day run goes from St. Louis to Poplar Bluff, Mo. The route crosses the Mississippi River at Chester, Il l., then heads back into Missouri on the Illmo Bridge south of Cape Girardeau, Mo. A chartered bus will return to St. Louis Union Station by 8 p.m. Fares start at $164.

The second trip is a fall foliage tour of the Ozarks, Oct. 28-30. The trip begins with bus transportation from St. Louis to Little Rock, Ark. The second day includes a ride on a deluxe Union Pacific streamliner across Arkansas through the White River Valley to Branson, Mo., with bus transportation home the next day. Fares start at $398.
