Mcdonnell Vies for Defense Contracts at Seoul Air Show

Russian, French and American jet fighters screamed over Seoul over the weekend as the three countries scrambled for one of the world's most lucrative air defense contracts.

The inaugural Seoul Air Show, a trade exposition for South Korea's emerging aerospace industry, will open today, enabling manufacturers a chance to grab contracts worth a total of $24 billion to modernize the South Korean air force.

Over 200 aerospace and defense industry exhibitors from 21 nations will display goods at the seven-day show. The top three contenders for South Korea's fighter jet program are Dassault Aviation's Rafale fighter jet from France, McDonnell Douglas Corp.'s F/A-18 Hornet from the United States and the Sukhoi Su-30 from Russia. "While the French are offering a lot of technical know-how, it would be very difficult for South Korea to turn its back on its long relationship with the U.S," said a European exhibitor. The United States maintains 37,000 troops in South Korea. …
