Health Problems Force Belleville Judge to Retire

Associate Judge C. Glenn Stevens of Belleville, forced off the bench by illness for the past three months, said Monday he would retire at the end of this month for health reasons.

The pension board that governs Illinois judges has approved early retirement.

Chief Circuit Judge Stephen M. Kernan said he hoped to have Stevens' judgeship filled by the end of the year. Lawyers interested in the position have until Nov. 22 to apply. The list of qualified applicants will be submitted to the Illinois S upreme Court, which will mail ballots to the circuit's 12 circuit judges whose vote will determine who fills the seat on the bench. The circuit comprises St. Clair, Monroe, Randolph, Washington and Perry counties. Stevens, 55, said he loved his work as a judge, but that his physicians have told him he suffers from chronic fatigue and stress-related problems that have affected his immune system. He was hospitalized for a few days late last year after collapsing on the bench. …
