The Trojanettes of Troy Buchanan High opened the basketball season with some high hopes.

And rightly so. The Trojanettes return virtually their entire lineup from a team that came on strong late last season.

"We graduated one senior; she was a good, hard-working player, but she was more of a role player for us," said Troy coach Renee Bishop, whose team was 13-13 overall and 5-3 in Gateway Athletic Conference play a year ago. "The girls we have back are the ones who did most of the scoring and rebounding last year. They're a year older and a year more experienced. These girls played a lot of AAU ball over the summer and they're playing well right now." The Trojanettes improved to 6-0 Wednesday, beating Marquette 51-23 in the opening round of the ninth annual Troy Trojanette Coca-Cola Classic. Troy, the tournament's third seed, was scheduled to play seventh-seeded Hannibal in the semifinals Thursday. Troy beat Hannibal 53-40 in Hannibal last week. The tournament wraps up Saturday with four games. The action begins at 3 p.m., with the title game slated for 7:30 p.m. "We're happy with the way we started the season and hopefully that'll continue," said Bishop, whose in her third season of coaching at her alma mater. "We have a lot of talent on this team and we're expecting a good season. We expect to contend for the GAC title and to do well in postseason play." The Trojanettes figure to be led this season by 5-foot-6 guard Sarah Lawrence. A third-year starter and a returning All-GAC player, Lawrence recently signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Missouri-St. Louis next year. As a junior, she averaged 15.3 points, 4.3 assists and 3.3 steals. She's capable of playing the point and of knocking down the 3-pointer. "Sarah's a key player for us," Bishop said. "Last year, we relied on her to carry the scoring load a lot of the time. …
