Ewing, Knicks Fire Away at Pistons

Patrick Ewing scored 30 points and the New York Knicks followed coach Jeff Van Gundy's oral trashing of the Pistons with one of their most spirited games of the year, a 95-92 win over Detroit on Saturday night.

New York led for the final 47 minutes and avenged its worst defeat in 10 seasons, a 112-78 loss last Wednesday in Allan Houston's first game against his former teammates.

Houston was booed every time he touched the ball in that game and scored only two points - a statistic the Pistons left on the scoreboard after the rest of the lights had been turned off. "I could not believe the lack of class shown by the Detroit organization at the end of the game, leaving Allan's points on the scoreboard. They showed as little class as they possibly could," Van Gundy said in a pregame talk with reporters, who were summoned to the arena early by the team's publicity staff. Detroit's front office downplayed the scoreboard incident - "It was probably done by some kid who makes $4 an hour," spokesman Matt Dobek said - but the Knicks seemed to use it as a motivating tool. Bulls 111, 76ers 105: Michael Jordan scored 31 points and Chicago survived a scare from lowly Philadelphia to win its sixth in a row. The Bulls led by only one point with just under three minutes left, but then went on a 7-0 run to send the 76ers to their 10th loss in a row. Scottie Pippen added 22 for Chicago, while Dennis Rodman had 12 points and 18 rebounds. Philadelphia rookie Allen Iverson led all scorers with 32 points. Nets 101, Celtics 100: Kendall Gill sank a pull-up 12-foot jumper with 1.5 seconds remaining to give New Jersey a victory over Boston. Gill scored 13 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter as New Jersey snapped a five-game losing streak.
