James A. Meagher Sr., a former auto dealer in St. Charles County, died Friday (Dec. 20, 1996) of infirmities at St. Anthony's Medical Center in south St. Louis County. He was 90 and lived in St. Charles.

Mr. Meagher began his 52-year career in the auto industry as an executive with General Motors Corp. in Wichita, Detroit and St. Louis.

In 1953, he started Jim Meagher Chevrolet in St. Charles and subsequently opened an Oldsmobile-Cadillac dealership in St. Peters. He ran the businesses with his son, James A. Meagher Jr., who died in 1994. In 1975, Mr. Meagher received Time magazine's Quality Dealer Award for exceptional performance and distinguished community service. He was head of the dealerships until he retired in 1993. He was a former board member of the Missouri Auto Dealers Association and of the St. Louis Chevrolet and Oldsmobile dealer associations.
