Peace Prize Winner's Return Sets Off Brawls

Tens of thousands of people greeted Bishop Carlos Belo's return to East Timor on Tuesday after his acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize. But his homecoming triggered bloody brawls between supporters and opponents of independence for East Timor. Belo and an exiled East Timor resistance leader shared this year's prize for their campaign for a peaceful resolution to the conflict over Indonesia's 21-year occupation of East Timor, a former Portuguese colony. At the Dili airport, two people were beaten in a brawl between pro-independence East Timorese and Indonesian troops. Later at the Dili cathedral, young people beat a pro-Indonesian East Timorese man to death, Portuguese TSF Radio reported. AP ROMANIA Former King Can Visit Native Land, Official Says Romania's ex-King Michael, who was barred by the former leftist government from visiting his native land, will be allowed to enter Romania "without difficulties," the country's new foreign minister, Adrian Severin, said Tuesday. "From a political point of view, we see no difficulty for the former sovereign of Romania to visit the country," Severin said. His remarks were in response to a Christmas address sent by Michael to Romanians from his exile in Switzerland. "I know that I will be soon with you, after a long and unjust separation," Michael's statement said. Reuters FRANCE Muslim Rebels Threaten To `Destroy' Country An Algerian Islamic rebel group has threatened to "destroy" France. A senior official said Tuesday that a letter to President Jacques Chirac purportedly from the Armed Islamic Group pledged to "continue" attacks unless he intervened to free a rebel leader awaiting execution in Algeria. The letter made an apparent reference to the bombing Dec. 3 of a commuter train at Paris' Port-Royal station. …
