Not a day went by for the last 35 years that George Morgan didn't think about the death of his 4-year-old half-sister, Michele, who Morgan says was stomped on and mortally injured by her stepmother at their home near Mascoutah, Ill.

"It seems like inside, I've always been sad," said Morgan, 44. "I've always thought about that moment. I tried to block it out and stay busy all the time. I felt depressed thinking about it. I still do think about it to this day and will until the day I die."

Now Morgan says he feels somewhat unburdened of the memory because of his decision to go public in letters with information that has led to criminal charges being filed against his stepmother, Mary M. Morgan. "It really has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders," said Morgan, who is serving a 45-year sentence in the Jefferson City Correctional Center for raping and sodomizing an 11-year-old girl. He answered reporters' questions Thursday at the prison. Mary Morgan, 56, of West Columbia, Texas, is being held in a county jail near Houston. A hearing on a request to extradite her to St. Clair County, Ill., is scheduled for Wednesday. She has told investigators that she did not kill the child. If Mary Morgan goes to trial on murder charges, George Morgan will be the state's key witness. Michele Morgan and George Morgan had the same father and different mothers. Their father was a military policeman in the Air Force when the family lived in a rented farm home near Mascoutah. Morgan was 8 when his sister died in August 1961, but he said he remembers how Mary Morgan stomped repeatedly on Michele's abdomen after accusing her of refusing to tell the truth. The little girl died at a hospital the next day. Efforts to reach Mary Morgan on Thursday were unsuccessful. Her lawyer, William Wilder of West Columbia, declined to comment on Morgan's statements. George Morgan is a thickly built 6-footer. Black eyebrows and long sideburns frame his dark-complexioned face. He sits still when answering questions as if conserving the movement of his thick hands and tattooed arms.
