TWO-TIME Oscar winner Tom Hanks, who played astronaut Jim Lovell in "Apollo 13," is returning to outer space on HBO.

Hanks will executive-produce "From the Earth to the Moon," a dramatic anthology of 13 hourlong films tracing America's Apollo space missions. The largest original programming venture in HBO history, "Earth" will begin production in mid-February for a December '97 debut.

"Earth," to shoot at the Kennedy Space Center and other Florida locations, is based, in part, on Andrew Chaikin's book, "A Man on the Moon." (He will serve as a consultant.) "Earth" covers the U.S. space race from 1961 (Alan Shepard) to 1972's final Apollo lunar mission. No cast yet. Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Michael Bostick, producers of the big-screen "Apollo 13," will produce the HBO event. Hanks will direct one episode.
