Alan Rudolph is not sure what Formula Motorsports, Inc., was looking for in its special run-off for kart drivers in Florida.

Rudolph, from St. Charles, has been one of the nation's top kart racers over the last five years. Because of his success in karts, he was one of six kart-racing drivers invited to Sebring International Raceway and the Walt Disney World oval for test runs on Dec. 5 and Dec. 7, respectively.

Whoever did the best against the clock in identical United States Formula Ford 2000 race cars would get the nod to race in a national championship race at Walt Disney World on Jan. 24 in a preliminary event to the Indy Racing League season opener in Orlando, Fla. At Sebring, Rudolph easily was the top driver. His best time was 1 minute 15.10 seconds around the road course. In fact, Rudolph has the best time of any of the pro teams on hand for practicing at the famous course in southern Florida that week. Carson Combs, of Sheridan, Ill. …
