3 Aboard Plane Killed When It Hits House

A private twin-engine plane crashed into a home in an inner-city neighborhood in Birmingham, Ala., shortly after takeoff Monday. All three people on board were killed, emergency officials said. Airport officials said the disabled Piper PA-34 had veered past a downtown office building while trying to turn around and head back to Birmingham International Airport. Those inside the house managed to escape the burning structure. Reuters INDIANA 2 Years Before Election, Sen. Dan Coats Bows Out Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., announced Monday that he won't seek re-election in 1998. "I want to leave when I am young enough to contribute somewhere else - young enough to resume a career outside government," the 53-year-old lawyer said. Gov. Evan Bayh, a Democrat, was expected to challenge Coats next year. Coats said he could win against Bayh but dreaded the "single-minded, two-year devotion" to fund raising and campaigning. AP LOS ANGELES Photographer Who Killed Model Gets Life In Prison A free-lance photographer was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of model Linda Sobek. Charles Rathbun, 38, was convicted last month of murdering Sobek, whom he had hired for a photo shoot. Rathbun buried Sobek's body last year in a shallow grave in the Angeles National Forest but later led police to the site. At his trial he maintained that Sobek's death had been an accident, initially claiming to have struck her while practicing stunts in a sport utility vehicle he was assigned to photograph. After an autopsy showed Sobek had been suffocated, Rathbun claimed he had accidentally asphyxiated her while they were having consensual sex - a story the prosecution disputed.
