Breese: The St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary will hold its annual Christmas Bake and Craft Sale at the hospital. The bazaar will feature decorative Christmas items such as baskets, centerpieces, wreaths and other decor, baked goods and gift items.

LIFEGUARD COURSE Belleville: The YMCA of Southwest Illinois will teach the National YMCA Lifeguard Course at the Belleville YMCA Center. Participants must be accomplished swimmers and at least 16 years old within four weeks of completion of the course. The course includes classroom instruction and practical work in personal safety, lifeguard techniques, first aid and CPR certification. An advanced aquatic safety course will be held at the same time for children who are at least 11. Early registration is recommended. Place: Belleville YMCA Center, 15 North First Street. Puppies, dogs, kittens and cats are available. The cost of adopting a dog includes a rabies shot, DHLPP, collar, leash, ID tag and $15 spay/neuter deposit. Cat adoptions include FVRCPP shots, collar, ID tag and $15 spay/neuter deposit. Purebreds and declawed cats are available. Place: PetsMart. Between 200 and 400 American Bald Eagles winter each year November through February along the scenic Great River Road near the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Place: Tours leave from the Greater Alton/Twin Rivers Convention and Visitors Bureau, 200 Piasa Street. When: January and February. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS Alton: Celebration of Christmas opens its fifth season with a new 300-foot lighted tunnel, a new 40-foot-long castle guarded by toy soldiers and 400,000 new lights - bringing the total display to 1 million sparkling lights. A new route includes an extra half mile of lighted enchantment, featuring the lighted tunnel that ushers visitors to new displays.
