The Francis Howell girls basketball team opened the 1996-97 season in style last week, winning 62-40 over visiting Wentzville.

"It's always nice to start with a win and it's even better when it comes in a conference game," Howell coach Mike Gibbons said. "We came out strong and really took control of the game. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come for us this season."

The Lady Vikings, who are playing this week in the Oakville Tournament, figure to be pretty solid this season; they return four starters from a team that finished 16-11 overall and 5-3 in the Gateway Athletic Conference a year ago. "There are going to be some excellent teams in the area this year; Howell North already beat Incarnate Word, Duchesne has some excellent players returning and Troy's going to be strong, too," Gibbons said. "But I definitely look for us to be right there. We have the experience and as long as we can play team ball, we're going to be a very competitive basketball team." The Lady Vikings figure to be led this season by returning senior starters Sarah Ewalt, Crystal Martin, Caitlin Sweeney and Julie Davidson. Martin, a 5-foot-11 forward, was a second-team all-league selection last year while Ewalt, a 6-2 post player, earned honorable mention recognition. Davidson returns at point guard while Sweeney figures to be the team's top outside threat. Sweeney is the sister of Tiffani Sweeney, Howell's lone All-GAC player from a year ago. "We have a real good group of athletes on this team; we have good size, but we also have some quickness," Gibbons said. "It's a well-balanced team. We're going to be able to play the kind of pressure defense we like to play and we're also going to have a number of options to use at the offensive end of the floor." Erin Shepherd, a 5-10 sophomore who led the junior-varsity in scoring a year ago, figures to be the other starter for Howell. The Lady Vikings' bench includes seniors Beth Deckelman, Stephanie Dolrenry and Lisa Giarraffa, juniors Ashley Diekamp, Gina Fortanini and Sarha McMullin and sophomores Carrie Guenzler and Charonda Woods. …
