The bad news Thursday for television watchers was the announcement of firings at the St. Louis area's largest cable television company.

Tele-Communications Inc. of Denver said it fired 6.5 percent of its 38,500 employees nationwide.

In St. Louis city and St. Louis and St. Charles counties, about 30 managers and support staff are losing their jobs. The company employs about 145 workers in St. Louis and 450 in the metropolitan area, including Belleville and Scott Air Force Base. In Illinois, 144 employees are being fired; 79 in Missouri are losing their jobs. Company representatives said that no workers who install and repair cable television will be dismissed in the St. Louis area. TCI itself has been under fire in St. Louis and elsewhere for poor service and for taking up to two weeks to respond to complaints such as no reception. The company says customers will get better service from its smaller work force. "The focus is to deliver top-quality customer service," said corporate spokeswoman Lela Cocoros. …
