Anne Simmons, a junior at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School, is in this week's spotlight for her commitment to volunteer service.

Anne recently was honored as volunteer of the year in Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, co-sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School principals.

Now she will vie for one of two state awards in this program. Winners will be selected this spring. In addition to organizing a recycling program for aluminum cans at her school, Anne volunteers as a teacher's aid for a religion class for public-school first-graders at Immaculate Conception Church in Maplewood. As a participant in the Missouri Fine Arts Academy this summer at Southwest Missouri State University, Anne says she enjoyed introducing the arts to preschoolers with finger painting. Anne maintains a 4.0 grade-point-average. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is on the executive committee of the student council. Anne, 16, is already an accomplished artist. Her drawing of her brother when he was a child was displayed at an exhibit of the St. Louis Artists Guild. She also has had Aboriginal artwork displayed at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Jefferson City and pastel drawings displayed in an exhibit at the St. Louis Art Museum. Anne lives with her parents, Thomas and Ellen Simmons, in Maplewood. She has four older siblings: Milica, 27; Nick, 25; Tony, 21; and Joye, 19. Here is what Anne says: After high school I plan to: go to college and major in education. The next item of clothing I would like to buy is: a new pair of jeans. I listen to: oldies. The last time I cleaned my room I found: the floor. …
