Hazelwood C., Lafayette Prove Hard Work Works

Article excerpt

Tonight's soccer game between Hazelwood Central and Lafayette may lack the glamour of the other Class 4A quarterfinal at A-B Conference and Sports Centre - No. 1 St. Louis U. High vs. No. 2 CBC - but it should be just as competitive.

Ninth-ranked Central (18-8-2) meets No. 10 Lafayette (20-5-2) at 7 p.m. while SLUH (24-3-4) and CBC (24-4-2), the two top teams in the Post-Dispatch large-schools poll, square off at 8 p.m.

His backfield features seniors Brian Colmo, Nick Zurmuehlen, Chris Locher and sophomore Josh Quigle. "But our defense doesn't stop with the defenders," said Schulenberg, whose top scorer, sophomore Nathan Mason, has six goals. "When the other team gets the ball, we've got nine or 10 guys back, working to defend." Like Central, Lafayette is strong in goal - senior Brian Cross has 14 of the team's 15 shutouts. The Lancers' top scorer is junior Matt Gross (24 goals). Playmaking junior Tommy Marsh is another key player. …
