You might say that Lois and Carl Eklund wanted to take a trip down a garden path.

Trouble was, the only path they had to trek on was buckled by the unruly roots of yews and trees in their front yard.

Add to that the look of an old-fashioned path running parallel to the house and hidden by all those darned yews. Lois Eklund says she felt the yew-bordered walkway "was kind of severe." "They looked like little military men lined up in a row," she says. "What we were going for," she adds, "was a more open, airy, kind of gracious look." That, they got. With the help of garden designer Katy O'Brien, the Eklunds styled a path for their front yard that curved gently from the front door out through the lawn and to a driveway on one side.
