Knocked off Troy Buchanan Upends Zumwalt North 2-1 in District, Will Face South

Article excerpt

The Troy Buchanan High Trojans have won district soccer games before.

"We beat Fort Zumwalt North two years ago and we won a first-round game the year before that when we played at Smithton," Troy coach Leo Pagano said. "But we've never won a second-round game; it's going to be tough, but at least we have a shot at it."

The fifth-seeded Trojans (11-10) knocked off No. 4 Fort Zumwalt North 2-1 Saturday in a Class 4A District 9 game at North. Troy was slated to play top-seeded Fort Zumwalt South in Monday's semifinals. The title game will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Francis Howell North. "We came into districts feeling pretty good about our chances," Pagano said. "We've played some pretty decent soccer over the past couple of weeks. Zumwalt North beat us 1-0 earlier this season and 1-0 last year in districts. But we knew that if we played well, we'd have a shot at advancing." The Trojans had the wind in the first half but failed to score. So when Kurt McMenamy put North on top early in the second half, the pressure was on. "At that point, we were definitely concerned," Pagano said. "Late in the first half, we pushed forward to try to get a goal with the wind, but we weren't able to. Then, 10 minutes into the second half, they scored to make it 1-0. "But our guys didn't panic. We stuck with our game plan and we stayed disciplined. I was really proud of the way our guys reacted to the pressure." Jim Reiter was tripped in the penalty area and converted the penalty kick with about 12 minutes to play. Then, with just under three minutes left, Jack Reiter got by the Panther defense and moved in for a shot. His shot was stopped, but teammate John Pace tapped in the rebound for the game-winner. Zumwalt North finished 10-17. Also in Class 4A District 9, third-seeded St. Charles West had little trouble with No. 6 Wentzville, winning 6-1 Saturday at West. The Warriors (13-6-3) received goals from six different players - Josh Linneman, Matt Demling, Pat Demling, Eric Horner, Aaron Damper and Tony Beer. Chris Dahl scored for Wentzville (8-l8). West and Francis Howell North were set to meet in the other District 9 semifinal at Howell North Monday. In other games played last week: Fort Zumwalt South 0, St. Dominic 0 - In a game played Friday, South, the Gateway Athletic Conference champion, played to a scoreless draw against visiting St. Dominic. St. Dominic (13-3-6) is ranked second among area small schools while Zumwalt South (20-2-3) is No. 10 in the large-schools poll. Jay Wright (St. Dominic) and Todd Young (Zumwalt South) posted the shutout. Lutheran-St. Charles 1, Fort Zumwalt North 0 - Ryan Guffey scored on a penalty kick and Bryce Mehrhoff had the shutout as the Cougars capped a 15-5-1 regular season. The victory Thursday capped an 8-0 month for the Cougars, who posted seven shutouts and allowed just one goal in October. …
