Abortion Pill Group Sues Man over License

The group that holds U.S. rights to RU-486 is suing a businessman to wrest control of his marketing licenses for the abortion drug.

The nonprofit Population Council Inc. said it never would have granted the licenses to Joseph D. Pike if it had know he had been disbarred as a lawyer after admitting to forgery.

In lawsuit filed Monday in New York's trial-level Supreme Court, the group charged that Pike fraudulently had hidden his past misconduct. Pike's spokeswoman in San Diego, Leslie Sebastian, had not seen the lawsuit but said they intend to move forward with "an ironclad contract." The council's lawsuit follows a similar one filed against Pike last week by one of his investors in the RU-486 project. The council disclosed then that it had asked Pike to relinquish control voluntarily. The council owns the U.S. rights to RU-486, which can induce abortions in the first seven weeks of pregnancy. The group said it does not want to rescind the licenses because that would delay introduction of the abortion pill. …
